THE SETUP

Want to know what being black in America feels like? Be (and say you’re) a virgin. No policemen will shoot you, but the words you’ll hear are more hurtful than sticks and stones. On Twitter, for instance, you’re automatically #pickmetwitter

Are they? This is news to me, honestly. I have virgin friends, both male and female. Who gives a shit? They’re all hoes.
Now I understand why that girl on my Facebook keeps going on and on and on about her sexual purity pledge. I’m always thinking, shut the fuck up, nobody cares, just do your thing. So it’s out of vogue? Haha! Eeyah.

JOY

I don’t think virginity is out of vogue per se, I just think the present generation is very concerned with conforming to trends and defensively picks on those who refuse to be swayed as easily as they have been. In the final analysis, we’re all human beings with the same body parts. Nobody is more or less of anything by virtue of whether or not they’ve had sex.

TOOLSMAN

Says who? I don’t think virgins are out of vogue, I just think like several other things, the concept of being a virgin has evolved. Nowadays you have what I like to call the 21st-century virgins. As for why it seems they are out of fashion or why the concept had to evolve, well, would you want to walk into a room that has scorpions in it blindfolded?

With technology and the internet, we are consuming all forms of media at an alarming rate and the media will always push its own agenda. Like we all know, sex sells and we are buying it up by the minute.

RACHAEL

I don’t have a problem with virgins, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with keeping or losing one’s virginity. I won’t shame a virgin, neither will I hail him/her. I don’t get the hype around it, however, especially for women. I won’t bash or congratulate anyone for choosing to keep or lose a mere anatomical landmark.

Some virgins don’t even make the decision for themselves as they are pressured into it, some think they are doing the world a favour and look down on others for choosing otherwise, some people even lie about being virgins. These are probably some of the reasons people shun them.

SPENCER

Are they really out of vogue? I doubt it. Maybe it’s because I know an awful lot of virgins (going by what they told me oh and I don’t really have any reason to doubt) and they aren’t scared to say it if the conversation comes up. I’ll, however, admit that most of them are not keen to ‘loud it’ anymore, the same way I wouldn’t say in front of my grandmother that I don’t want to have kids.

ENIOLA

Virgins are not out of vogue… It’s just annoying that some of us have this unfortunate sense of entitlement. Because we are virgins we expect life to treat us nicely and not fuck us over… Then we also have the bitter non-virgins. Always mad because a virgin says shes’s a virgin and proud then they start hymen-hating.

BIODUN

The world has gone loco in terms of sexual permissiveness and debauchery and being a virgin these days in most places is like being from the Jurassic era. It used to be something only boys got ridiculed for (remember the movie ‘Last American Virgin?) but now girls get shamed for never having tasted cucumber.

That said, a lot of people low key regret and feel guilty that they’ve been sexually reckless. Since the process is irreversible (at least mentally), they go about denigrating the ‘lucky’ untrodden ones, some sort of reverse psychology where you bad mouth something you secretly desire. It’s like the fox spitting insults at that unreachable apple. If you’re one, just disregard the snide comments.

HAUWA

Social construct. Also, people still desire virgins. They talk about it not just as much as they talk about sex. Just like there are virgins but they’d rather not mention it to the wrong people to avoid being casted. I still have friends that are virgins and I think they’re better off without sex until they’re ready.
